EXPRESSION

1. Expressing Satisfaction

· Expressing Satisfaction: expressing good feeling; sense of comfort or happiness.

· Use to express satisfaction.

· When we are happy after we see a concert and we are really contented with the performance, when we are happy about our result of exam we must feel satisfied.

The expression that you can use:

· Formal Situations :

1. to be + very pleased with …

2. to be + content with …

3. to be + satisfied with …

4. to be + very delighted …

· Informal Situations :

1. Super!

2. Great!

3. Terrific!

4. Fantastic!

5. Smashing!

6. Perfect!

7. Everything is fine.

Robert : How do you feel about this food?

Terry : Wow….. I am very satisfied. It’s very delicious.

Robert : Yes, I think so. Would you have anymore?

Terry : Yes, of course.

Robert : I will take some for my younger sister. She’ll be very happy.

Terry : Yeah and I will take for my mom at home.

2. Expressing Dissatisfaction

· Expressing Dissatisfaction: expressing lack of satisfaction.

· Use to express dissatisfaction.

· When we do not get as enough as we hope and feel disappointed with some conditions, we must be dissatisfied.

Paul : Yes, the apology from the company. Take a look. The paper is over there.

James : (Picking up the newspaper and starting to read it) Is that all?

Paul : Yes.

James : This is not enough. I’m not satisfied yet. The size of the ads should have been half of the page. Besides, the company only apologized but they didn’t mention what they would do.

Paul : Oh, come on. The point is not the matter of the size, but the company’s sincere to apologize.

James : Still it’s not satisfying.

Paul : I think they have already shown their good will. It’s more than enough.

3. Expressing Pleasure

· Expressing Pleasure: expressing enjoyment, happiness or satisfaction

· Use to express pleasure, showing one’s feeling of happiness.

4. Expressing Relief

· Expressing Relief: expressing a lessened pain or stress.

· Use to express relief.

· When we have problem, then we can solve it, we will feel relief. In other situation, when we worry about something that we will face, then we can face it, we will also feel relief. A relief is lessening or ending of pain and worry.

The following are expression of relief:

1. What a relief!

3. I’m very relieved to hear that.

4. I’m glad everything is running well.

5. I’m glad it’s done.

6. It’s very relaxing.

Expressing Relief Dialogue

Daughter : Mom, can I go to my friend’s birthday party tonight?
Mother : Whose party, honey?
Daughter : David’s party.
Mother : What! Do you mean that David? I don’t think he’s a suitable boy. I will never allow you to go there.
Daughter : But, mom….
Mother : No buts, Sarah! You are not going to a party at his house. Never!

The next day, Mrs. Smith went to the supermarket to shop. Suddenly she saw an old school friend from years ago. Her name used to be Alice Cowper, but now, she was Mrs. Alice Templeton, mother of the infamous David, the monster of Sarah’s class.

That night, Mrs. Smith told Sarah that maybe she had been too harsh with her over David’s party. Therefore, she was changing her mind and allowing her to attend David’s party on Saturday night. Sarah was much relieved. Throwing her arms around her mother, Sarah said:

Sarah : Oh, mother, thank you so much. Everyone thought I was such an idiot for not being allowed to attend David’s party. He is really such a sweet boy. I’m so happy and relieved.
Mother : Don’t get carried away, Sarah.

5. Expressing Pain

  • Expressing Pain: expressing emotional or mental suffering.
  • Use to express if you get hurt
  • When we get sick, we must feel pain on our part of body. When we get an accident, and we get injured because of it, we must feel pain.

The following are some expressions of expressing pain :

1. It’s very painful. I can’t stand it.

2. The pain hurt me very much.

3. That hurts!

4. Oh, my headaches.

5. It hurts me so much.

6. Expressing Love

Expressing Love: expressing great liking of someone or something

-use to express love, happy, if you like something or someone, you express love

-ex.: ~ I love you

~ Let me love you.

~ I fall in love with you.

-response: ~ I love you too

Mirna : What is that ?

Ardi : Just a small thing. I hope you like it. (show the ring)

Mirna : Oh, … this is wonderful. I love it.

7. Expressing Sadness

-use to express sadness, if you have a big problem and you don’t know what to do

-ex: ~ Oh, I just don’t know what to do …

~ Please leave me alone …

~ … comes as my great sadness.

~ I must say I had hoped…

~ I am very sad about…

~ I can’t believe what’s going on.

~ I can’t hold my tears on it.

~ Oh, no … (crying)

- You can give a response: ~ come on! It can’t be as bad as all that …

~ I can see why you’re so sad, but don’t give up..

Santi : I just don’t know what to do… I had studied hard but I failed.

Mrs. Arif : I can see why you’re so sad… but behind every cloud, there is silver lining.

Santi : I hope so, Mum.

8. Expressing Stance

· Expressing Stance: expressing point of view.

· Use to express stance.

-in formal situation can use: ~ Personally I believe… (your opinion)

~ My view of … is… (your opinion)

~ From my point of view, … (your opinion)

-in informal situation can use : ~If you ask me,… ( your opinion)

~ I guess … ( your opinion)

~ You know what I think? (I think)

-but I think is used both in formal situation and in informal situation.

9. Expressing Annoyance

Expressing Annoyance: expressing the feeling of being annoyed.

The following are some expressions of expressing Annoyance:

  1. I'm annoyed
  2. I had enough with it
  3. I can't stand it
  4. I can't bear it any longer
  5. I'm fed up with it
  6. You made me annoyed
  7. You are such pain in the neck
  8. You made me sick
  9. I’m extremely displeased with…
  10. …is very irritating
  11. I’m extremely unhappy about this
  12. …really makes me mad
  13. I cannot stand…
  14. Why on earth he didn’t…?

Expressing annoyance is used to express that someone is annoyed.

Example: I was annoyed at his constant interruption.

B : Really? I saw him with a girl in Lembayung cafe. I thought they were dating there.
A : But he said that he accompanied his mother to hospital
B : You were lied by him.
A : Yes, I know.

10. Expressing Embarrassment

· Expressing Embarrassment: expressing feeling of being worries end ashamed.

· Expressing embarrassment is used to show that someone is embarrassed.

The following are some expressions of expressing embarrassment:

  3. Oh, My God
  4. Shame on me
  5. I don't feel comfortable

11. Expressing Anger

· Expressing Anger: Expressing a strong feeling which makes you want to hurt someone or be unpleasant because of something unfair or hurtful that has happened.

  • Expressing anger is used to show that someone is angry.

The following are some expressions of expressing Anger :
